Okay, this may sound pretty lame but anyway.
I use a curling iron to curl my hair but instead of it looking curly it just looks a mess. :/
Any tips to help?
Thanks.

Hair curling help. :)?
Set hair using sponge rollers at night. Wake up to beautiful curls. Use larger sections of hair and larger rollers for bigger curls. Smaller hair sections and smaller rollers result in smaller, tighter curls. Spritz damp hair with spray gel before setting.
Use bendable sticks to achieve curls that look incredibly natural. Divide hair into small sections. Hold bendable stick halfway down your hair length. Twist the bottom half of hair around the stick and then twist the stick the remaining way toward your scalp. Twist the ends of the stick into each other to hold in place.
Divide hair into several sections. Divide each section into smaller sections. Braid each smaller section and roll the braid up to your scalp and secure with a hairpin.
Use steam rollers in the morning. Uncover natural-looking curls just fifteen minutes after your rollers are set.
Use a 1/2-inch curling iron to wind a small section of hair. Hold for five seconds, then unravel. Repeat with remaining hair sections. Don't comb completely through. Use a pick to position curls.
Don't rely only on special curling shampoos. They rarely work alone. Use curling shampoo in combination with another above method.
Hair curling help. :)?
Okay, depends on how good your iron is. I bought a really really cheap thin barreled one, and all it did was made my hair look frizzy and dry and horrible, and it took me ages because it didn't heat up high enough.
Secondly, make sure you're using the right stuff - wash it 24 hours before you do it, don't use conditioner, use plenty of hairspray. It depends on what you want from it, if you want loose, big, natural curls, buy a curler with a big barrel, but if you want tight, unnatural looking curls, buy one with a smaller barrel.
