Homemade dreadlocks?

First of all, I have my heart set on dreadlocks. So any of you overzealous conformist sheep take your idiocy elsewhere.

I've called around and all the salons charge around $120-200, and that is way out of my budget. I am however willing to fork out around $40 for dreadheadhq's super dread kit that has all the stuff you need.

I have a friend that is willing to do it, but reluctant because they fear they will screw it up. They have the time, they are just worried about ruining my hair. How difficult is it to do dreads without any professional haircare experience?

Just some background information: I am a Caucasian male, shoulder length hair, wavy but for the most part straight.
