Will developer from the hair dye boxes at cvs or walgreens lighten dark hair lighter without the using color?

If i bought loreal preference hair dye in a shade lighter than my own natural hair then can i use the


developer alone to lighten my hair (i know it wont lighten it a lot but will it lighten it at all?)





*******i am naturally dark brown so if i buy a light brown dye and only put the developer on my hair then what will it do?
